I love movies and martial arts.

You may know how much I love movies and martial arts.

I especially love when these two worlds provide valuable lessons.

In the movie “Hustle,” there’s a scene where Adam Sandler’s character — an NBA scout — has a heated heart-to-heart with the athlete he’s mentoring.

“It’s you against you out there,” he says. “When you walk on that court, you have to think, ‘I am the best guy out there.’”

It reminded me of the aikido expression “masakatsu agatsu,” which translates to, “True victory is victory over oneself.”

We’re often our biggest critics and our biggest doubters. That means we’re our biggest competition, too.

But here’s the good news: No one knows you as well as you do.

If we are honest with ourselves, we can identify the source of our inner conflict, then focus our energy on working through it.

That freedom helps us to be the best we can be, and claim our true victory.
