You may have heard of the Ice Man from the Netherlands

You may have heard of the Ice Man from the Netherlands, Wim Hof.  I recently got back into his method which, in part, prescribes a daily cold plunge.

It’s no picnic.

When you first step into the cold water, your body experiences a bit of a shock.  You gasp for air.  Your flight or fight mechanism flashes.  And you shiver — a lot.

But then your protective systems quickly kick in.

You start taking fuller breaths, warm blood courses through your body, and you tap into a keen sense of awareness and exhilaration. Most surprisingly, you start to enjoy it.

Apart from the freezing temps, it’s not so different from facing big challenges at work, home or the dojo.

Sometimes we feel like we are the indispensable leaders, the keystones to our family or team. But that’s a trap.

We have to step back at times and expose our family, our team and our students to those trials of ice, so they get the experience they deserve. They may reel at first, like the body in the cold, and we may be tempted to provide answers and solutions.

But instead of stepping in and saving the day, we should find ways to support their “plunges” and give them the chance to experience challenge, which in turn allows them to learn and adapt, rise to the occasion, and overcome.

It’s one of the ways we get better — as individuals, and as a group.  Come in and give yourself a challenge to face and a chance to better yourself.
